In fact, many of them have great opportunities to advance once youve been at it for a few years, too. Take a look at our top picks and get those applications ready- no matter how short your resume is. Love talking to people? Being a customer service representative may just be your perfect fit. Desirable qualities in an entry-level customer service rep include good communication skills, friendliness, and a positive, team-player attitude. If you have an interest in caring for other s, becoming a home care aid could be a good option for you. For some people, helping the elderly and sick with their day-to-day tasks is incredibly fulfilling. Depending on where you live, its likely that youll need a valid drivers license, and some jobs require a home aide certification, which you can sometimes earn while on the job.If youve dreamed of working in publicity, youre in luck. Public relations firms often seek out fresh candidates so they can mold them to their exacting standards. Youll need to be a strong writer, and above all, a people part. An entrepreneurial spirit and can-do attitude will serve you well in this profession, as most agents work on commi ssion, meaning the more you sell, the more you make.If youre the kind of person who can talk others into doing pretty much anything, sales is likely your forte. Whether youre selling a product to other businesses or to individual consumers, being persuasive, engaging, and friendly will get you far in this role. Sometimes, people in these roles are also asked to sit in on meetings and take notes or help prepare deliverables for major projects the company is working on. The Dos and Donts When Looking for a Position
The Dos and Donts When Looking for a PositionThe Dos and Donts When Looking for a PositionThe Dos and Donts When Looking for a PositionIt can be confusing and somewhat discouraging to look for a new lokalitt. Many people feel overwhelmed and simply dont know where to start. Lets face it, most of us dont make a career of finding a job, and there are many hurdles to get over.No matter where you start tactically, I recommend considering a strong geschftsleben strategy backgrounder. Here are some dos and donts when looking for your next positionDO Start with a job search strategy. Write down your accomplishments make sure you can back up career homeruns with bottom-line results such as revenue growth, team building or organizational changes that drove results.People are always asking me to evaluate their resume. Understand that your resume is simply a written summary that should be easy to evaluate and interpret by future business colleagues. Resumes dont get people jobs. But your replie s to the questions it provokes could. Make your resume work within the above strategy you craft.DONT Assume networking sites are for personal use only.Social networking sites have hidden land mines, so utilize these tools with discretion and understand the culture of the community. According to CNN, 34 percent of hiring managers chose not to hire a candidate based on what they found in profiles. Future employers are looking for candidates who will fit their culture, therefore controversial information such as inappropriate photographs on Facebook are evidence of poor communication skills and lack of maturity.Networking sites are often viewed by recruiters and hiring managers looking for active and passive candidates, so make sure that your profile is updated and positive.DO Seek out executive recruiters.Seek out the best recruiters in your industry, because good recruiters usually will give you a lead, advice and at the very least keep you on the radar for the next appropriate posit ion.Send your information to appropriate executive search firms and follow up with them every couple of months either via emaille or phone call. Dont get down if they dont get back to you they simply dont have a position that matches your profile.Build your relationships with worthy recruiters who will keep an eye out for people they know and who have taken the time to get to know them.DONT Bad mouth your boss and/or colleagues. Its off-putting and sends a red flag to prospective employers. Most hiring managers are viewing sites and looking for people that have positive comments about past social and business experiences. This includes online mentions. Hiring managers use social networking sites to quickly gain a well-rounded view of potential candidates. According to ComputerWorld, 22 percent of employers said they already pursue social networks to screen candidates, while an additional 9 percent said they are planning to do so.DO Know thy self. The candidates who land jobs understa nd value, crafting the best strategy that communicates that value and how to assert a winning attitude. How can you be one of those candidates? Know thy self understand how your skills and qualifications relate to the position you are applying for. Then write a brief, to-the-point cover letter stating what value you bring and how it relates to the company and their needs.DONT Be discouraged. If a recruiter doesnt call you back it doesnt mean youre not right for their niche, but they work for companies that hire them to find talent to identify specific profiles.DO Talk about solutions.Refer to industry trends and ask for a meeting to talk about future growth dare to be smarter and talk about business problems and solutions.DONT Just push send. The internet is a rocky road and can be a big waste of time if youre not focused. Please dont press send before looking up the company, do your homework and understand business needs.Searching for a position is work, and work takes effort and a lot of time. Its easy to be discouraged in this market, but hiring managers can only find you if you are putting yourself out there. You need to be vigilant in keeping up with specific job boards, networking communities, friends and past colleagues. Talk about business solutions by asking pertinent questions. Know the company and marketplace before sending your resume. Keep your profile professional and updated and dont lose heart, you will find a position.

I was tasked to develop a statistical approach for mapping the risk of contracting malaria in two villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Malaria has been reported to have regularly occurred in these two villages for m any years with, in many cases, fatal results. The WHO wanted to be able to predict with more accuracy the occurrence of malaria, elend only in the two villages, but in the whole country. Mapping was critical in successfully controlling incidence of malaria. To map the risk, I used SAS, a powerful statistical software package, to develop a statistical model to predict the risk of occurrence. I traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to actually observe the occurrence of malaria in the two villages and to collect data. When I arrived, I found that estimation was complicated by the local variation of risk that cannot be accounted for by the known variables. Also, my work became more challenging because data points of measured malaria prevalence were not evenly or randomly spread across the area to be mapped. To overcome this challenge, I used a simple two-stage approach for producing maps of predicted risk1.I used logistic regression modeling to determine approximate risk on a l arger scale, and2.I employed a geo-statistical approach to improve prediction at the local level. This two-stage approach resulted in a map showing the improvement of risk prediction brought about by the second stage. Before the end of my detail, I presented my two-stage approach to mapping the risk of malaria to the WHO. The WHO has adopted the approach I developed not only in the two villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but in other African countries as well.To recognize my novel approach, the WHO awarded me its Humanitarian Award in 2007. In addition, I have published a peer-reviewed article titled, A spatial statistical approach to Malaria mapping, in the spring 2008 issue of the journal Science describing my methodology.

Tricking People into Caring About Your Awards and College GPA
Tricking People into Caring About Your Awards and College GPATricking People into Caring About Your Awards and College GPAThe thrill of winning an award is quickly followed by discovering that no one really cares.Even though an award is someone telling you good job, if you talk about it at a dinner party, youre stepping into the realm of shameless self-promotion. That new contact youre meeting at a networking event doesnt want to hear about your community service award and a hiring manager who sees a 4.0 listed on your resume isnt going to be automatically compelled to call.Like most college seniors, my new intern Rebecca will be spending the next several months shoring up the grades and achievements that she envisions will make her resume stand out from other entry-level job seekers. This mentality of achievement is drilled into both students and workers. Meeting this months targets, next quarters goals, and our annual objectives are a constant drumbeat. As soon as one goal is honigw ein, the clock is already ticking on the next one. However, when it comes time to job search, communicating that you met your baseline expectations for nine consecutive quarters isnt an achievement that a hiring manager will care about because all youre saying is I did my job.The trick to transforming a personal or professional feat into something that will make employers take notice requires a switch in thinking the award must become secondary to the story.Yesterday morning my intern Rebecca was lamenting that her cumulative grade point average was two-tenths of a point below the cut-off for cum laude. With only two semesters until graduation, she had little time or room for error to achieve the GPA that will give her this honor.Although she was quick to admit that her GPA has limited applicability in the real-world, she remained steadfast to this aim. I didnt attempt to dissuade her from the goal, but instead advised her to start conceptualizing ways to turn her journey to achieve higher grades into a story that would resonate with future employers. The harsh truth is the GPA itself is irrelevant, as are all the other accolades pursued by students and workers alike. Whether its an academic prize, a ausverkauf plaque, or a civic honor, most awards are nondescript and many are suspect in their selection process, making the award inherently meaningless to others. However, you can overcome this emotional disconnection by developing a powerful story about the events that led up to the recognition. In order to make herself memorable and provide an edge over other candidates, I advised Rebecca to transform her GPA into a story that demonstrates her true character. For instance, she could talk about always being a diligent student, but that a life-threatening health concern arose during the middle of her junior year and temporarily derailed her studies. After fighting for her health, she resumed her studies and set a goal to graduate on-time and with honors. Within th e context of her personal struggles, the GPA becomes a gripping tale that reveals intimate and important elements of Rebeccas character. With this approach, its possible to turn losing an award into a point that reflects positively on you. In this case, I told Rebecca that even if she missed her goal of graduating cum laude, she could tweak the story within the context of her health scare and academic diligence. A version of the story about her missing her goal would share additional important details about her positive attitude and new-found understanding that good health is most important in life.Knowing Rebecca, I am confident she will graduate cum laude, but thats not what matters most. Ultimately, potential employers will be more impressed by what Rebecca overcame and learned in the process, than the numbers after the decimal point on her final transcript. The same is true of any award. Turn your honors and awards into stories to bring the journey to life in a way that reveals ch aracteristics that will be attractive to potential employers and new connections. Youll make people care about your awards without bragging about yourself or boring your audience.Want to start turning your achievements into stories? Related Articles Around the Web Inclusion in Action A Webinar on How to Source Diverse Talent One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-sol ving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in lead ership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an averag e salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

So, They Decided To Go With Someone Else
So, They Decided To Go With Someone ElseSo, They Decided To Go With Someone ElseWhat Im sick of hearing after 2 or 3 bewerbungsgesprchs is, we werent actually looking for someone with your background, which we should have known before we called the 1st time. Were sorry, but were going to go with someone else. So, that happened. Why on earth would an employer bring you in elend once, but 2 or 3 times, without being clear in their own minds regarding what they wanted? And once they got clear, well, what they wanted wasnt you.Its a waste of time. So, lets talk about what to do so that youre not investing time and emotional energy into employers who dont respect you. I want to make sure you get more control over the job search process, so you can interview for more opportunities that actually match, and finally hear some reasonable offers that you can choose from.Dont Just Follow The Application RulesOn the one hand, you have to do what the application says. Failing to do so can get you ca st out for simply not following directions. But I was just talking to a candidate today who wanted to know if she should apply online and reach out to the hiring manager, because she knew who the person was. Good question, to which the answer is a resounding, Yes.Job search is a time when its not only okay to draw outside the lines. In fact, I recommend it. This has to do with advocating for yourself, your career, and your life. Following all the rules in a picture perfect manner should get you in, but the reality it that it probably wont.Proactively, specifically reaching out to a real human being makes all the difference. The back door is the better bet.And if you cant identify the decision maker, identify the people on the team who hold roles similar to the one youre targeting. Build relationships, find out about the corporate culture, and if you like what you learn about the organization, ask those people for the name of the person you should speak to about coming on board.Dont F ocus on Your Interview PerformanceEvolve your interview mindset. Yes, its wonderful to get that call. Its great to go in there and meet with the person. But theres no need to be overly-grateful. If your quest is for the ideal job, then every interview and every opportunity simply isnt going to be for you.Is the organization of the caliber that you need? Is the role on the level you want? Are those people a fit for you? Take confidence in the reality that you control what youre going to be doing for minimally 8 hours every day. Therefore, approach the interview like youre also interviewing them.Youre allowed to be ever-so-slightly selfish. Bring questions to the table that indicate your level of seriousness about contributing to the organization, while at the same time illuminating how you will be evaluated if you decide to take on the role.Ask, What do you think are the most important qualities for me to excel in this role?, What are your expectations for this role during the first 30 days, 60 days, and year 1?, and, What types of skills is the team missing that youre looking to fill with a new hire? When you find out the answer to that last question, position your skill set as the ideal solution.Dont Just Accept What Youre GivenThis is about how you dont have to be a lapdog. I had a candidate receive an offer just last week. He was told the compensation would be X, but then when the offer letter came, it looked like the compensation would be X minus nearly 25%.Far too often, candidates would just take it, being so grateful to have an opportunity at all.But because the offer didnt meet the candidates minimum requirements, heres what he did he asked the question about why the written salary number was different than the oral offer. You have to move forth with the confidence of knowing the offer doesnt just get sucked away because you ask a legitimate question. The answer he heard was unsatisfactory. So he approached them again. The negotiation didnt end up being the original figure. However, it ended up being twice the written offer, with a written schedule of increases over the subsequent 6 months, based on performance metrics that were made clear to the candidate, which the candidate felt confident he could meet. You can only do this if youre crystal clear on what the right job means for you, your spouse, your household, and your family.Focus in on whats ideal. I know the tendency is to want to cast a wide net, but dont do it. Where you focus is where you will find not only what you want, but also whats right for you. Half of Americans consider themselves workaholics
Half of Americans consider themselves workaholics Half of Americans consider themselves workaholics Nearly half (48%) of Americans consider themselves to be workaholics, according to new research. It may also be that constant access to digital devices makes people feel like theyรขre working all the time รข" 78% of Americans display work-obsessed tendencies, such as looking at their phone as soon as they get up in the morning, with 58% of those checking their work email. Another 58% checked their work email from bed (72% of Millennials did the same). The group of people who feel like workaholics the most is Millennials 25-34 years old, at 55%, while 37% of respondents age 55+ felt the same. The study of 2,000 working Americans was conducted by OnePoll on behalf of The Vision Council.Self-professed workaholics said they were that way out of a passion for their job (34%), financial necessity (27%), or for both reasons (35%).Meanwhile, working Americans worried about work while they were on vacation, while they were not at work, and they also worried they prioritized their work over havi ng a personal life. They spent an average of four hours working off the clock. They also didnรขt make their lives easier by taking care of personal tasks at work, feeling that they either werenรขt allowed to or were uncomfortable doing so.Working Americans racked up an average of seven and a half hours of looking at screens รข" from laptops to desktops to smartphones รข" every day. 35% of Americans logged an impressive nine hours of screen time daily.Millennials were the most stressed out about work, at 61%, followed by 52% of ages 35-44, 49% of ages 45-54, and a scant 39% of ages 55 and older. While studies say healthy workaholics exist (if you love your work and are engaged), there are ways to curb workaholism if you want to. Start by taking breaks every hour (52 minutes of work to 17 minutes of break is one suggestion), avoid eating lunch at your desk, practice leaving work on time, and donรขt let yourself get tethered to your phone and email in your off-hours. Also รข¦ take a vacation!

Why Mister Rogers message of love is good for your health
Why Mister Rogers' message of love is good for your health Why Mister Rogers' message of love is good for your health The release of the Mister Rogers documentary, รขWonรขt You Be My Neighbor?รข calls to mind the essential message of Rogersรข long-running childrenรขs program, รขMister Rogersรข Neighborhood.รข Fred McFeely Rogers, who died in 2003, was also an ordained Presbyterian minister. Over the course of three decades on public broadcasting, he brought to millions of children what his faithรขs General Assembly referred to as รขunconditional love.รขIn preaching love, Rogers wasnรขt just attending to the moral character of his youthful audience. He believed that he was also promoting their health. As he said in 1979, รขMy whole approach in broadcasting has always been, รขYou are an important person just the way you are. You can make healthy decisions.รข Maybe Iรขm going on too long, but I just feel that anything that allows a person to be more active in the control of his or her life, in a healthy way, is important.รขSince Rogersรข death, evidence has mounted that he was on to s omething รข" namely, that love and kindness truly are healthful, and that people who express them regularly really do lead healthier lives. Simply put, people who are generous and volunteer their time for the benefit of others seem to be happier than those who donรขt, and happy people tend to have fewer health complaints and live longer than those who are unhappy.Love gave rise to a callingBorn in Pennsylvania in 1928, as a young minister Rogers regretted the messages television was conveying to children in the 1960s. He said, รขI went into television because I hated it so, and I thought thereรขs some way of using this fabulous instrument to nurture those who would watch and listen.รข รขMr. Rogersรข Neighborhoodรข debuted nationally in 1968 and won its creator and host many accolades, including a Presidential Medal of Freedom, two Peabody Awards, and over 40 honorary degrees.Rogers believed that the need to love and be loved was universal, and he sought to cultivate these cap acities through every program, saying in a 2004 documentary hosted by actor Michael Keaton, one of his former stagehands, รขYou know, I think everybody longs to be loved, and longs to know that he or she is lovable. And consequently, the greatest thing we can do is to help somebody know theyรขre loved and capable of loving.รขLove and healthAs it turns out, there are many ways in which love and kindness are good for health. For one thing, they tend to reduce factors that undermine it. Doing something nice for someone causes the release of endorphins, which help to relieve pain. People who make kindness a habit have lower levels of stress hormones such as cortisol. Intentionally helping others can even lower levels of anxiety in individuals who normally avoid social situations.Carrying out acts of kindness, or even merely witnessing them, also increases levels of oxytocin, a hormone with health benefits as diverse as lowering blood pressure, promoting good sleep and reducing cravin gs for drugs such as cocaine and alcohol. That oxytocin should have so many health benefits is not so surprising when we recall its central role in stimulating uterine contractions during birth, the letdown of milk during lactation, the pleasure associated with orgasm and pair bonding.Acts of generosity and compassion also appear to be good for mood. A 2010 study showed that while people with money tend to be somewhat happier than those without it, people who spend money on others report even greater levels of happiness, an effect that can be detected even in toddlers. When people give money to others, areas of the brain associated with pleasure are activated, and this response is greater when the transfer is voluntary rather than mandatory.Such happiness can have big benefits in longevity. For example, a review of 160 published studies concluded that there is compelling evidence that life satisfaction and optimism are associated with better health and enhanced longevity. Another st udy of older people showed that, even after correcting for other factors such as age, disease and health habits, those who rated their happiness highest were 35 percent less likely to die in five years than those who were least content. What would Mister Rogers say?Of course, Rogers would remind us that there are reasons to be committed to love and kindness that extend far beyond their health benefits. Rogers was, after all, not a physician but a minister, and ultimately he was ministering to an aspect of human wholeness that cannot be analyzed by blood tests or visualized with CT scans. In a commencement address at Dartmouth College in 2002, he focused less on the body than what he might have called the spirit:รขWhen I say itรขs you I like, Iรขm talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers ha te, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed.รข A pair of Mister Rogersรข sneakers at the LBJ Library exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pres. Johnson signing the Public Broadcasting Act in 1967. Jay Godwin/LBJ FoundationWhen Rogers encouraged children to be kinder and more loving, he believed that he was not only promoting public health but also nurturing the most important part of a human being รข" the part that exhibits a divine spark. As Rogers indicated in another commencement speech the year before at Middlebury College, รขI believe that appreciation is a holy thing, that when we look for whatรขs best in the person we happen to be with at the moment, weรขre doing what God does; so in appreciating our neighbor, weรขre participating in something truly sacred.รขIn expressing such deeply religious sentiments, Rogers was not trying to undermine a concern with bodily health. In fact, he regularly encouraged his viewers to adopt healthy life habits, and Rogers himself was a committed vegetarian and lifelong swimm er who maintained a low body weight his entire life. Yet he also believed that health alone does not a full life make, and he regarded the soundness of the body as but part of the wellness of whole persons and communities, which may explain why he was able to face his own mortality with such equanimity.Just a few months before he died, Rogers recorded a message for the many adult fans who had grown up watching รขMister Rogersรข Neighborhood.รข In it, he practiced what he preached, saying:รขI would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are. And whatรขs more, Iรขm so grateful to you for helping the children in your life to know that youรขll do everything you can to keep them safe. And to help them express their feelings in ways that will bring healing in many different neighborhoods. Itรขs such a good feeling to know that weรขre lifelong friends.รขRichard Gunderman, Chancellorรขs Professor of Medicine, Liberal Arts, a nd Philanthropy, Indiana University. At Simon Business School, Students Become Investors
At Simon Business School, Students Become Investors At Simon Business School, Students Become Investors I bring this up because I wonder how Slayback and Moorehouse would respond to the Simon Venture Fund (SVF), an early stage seed fund run by MBA and masters students at the University of Rochesters Simon School of Business. Many believe that the skills gap is due, in part, to a higher education system that doesnt equip students with real-world skills. If that is the case, the SVF is a clear example of one school addressing the problem directly by giving students the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the real world. Venture capital is becoming more mainstream and getting more publicity, says Brad Banikowski, a former student manager of the SVF who now sits on the funds advisory board, which consists of alumni and faculty members. Working with startups and entrepreneurs is becoming more a focus for the university as well. The amount you can learn [through the SVF] beyond whats covered in a classroom setting just adds to the education. A Student-Run Venture Fund The SVF began in 2012 as the result of a $1 million donation from Simon School of Business alumnus Dan Lazarek. Lazarek was later joined by alumnus Joe Abrams, who donated an additional $750,000. The fund made its first investment in 2013, and to date, it has invested $400,000 across 12 companies, with additional commitments of more than $1.4 million for future investments. Students can participate in the fund in one of three ways: as regular members, who attend meetings to watch and learn; as analysts, who carry out due diligence on companies and pitch potential investments to the fund; and as members of the student management team, who oversee the fund. Senior analysts become leaders if they do good work and express willingness to take on more responsibility and leadership, explains Lavin Godhwani, current president of the student management team. Its really a collaborative thing as well, adds Banikowski Students get to identify different roles they may want to take on for the following year, and the current management team will do the best we can to set them up for success in the next year through shadowing experiences and things like that. While the funds advisory board has the final say in which investments are made, the overall process is almost entirely student-driven. Teams of student analysts pitch companies for potential investment to club members during weekly meetings. Members critique and vote on these pitches. Those pitches that pass the vote are brought to the advisory board, which works with the student management team to decide whether or not an investment should be made. The Benefits of Diving In Simon students view the SVF as more than just an enjoyable extracurricular รข" they see it as a critical component of their education that lets them engage with the world outside of the classroom. The first and most important thing is it helps you build a network in the community of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists that you wouldnt have otherwise had the chance to deal with, Godhwani says. For example, Godhwani recalls one instance in which he was attending a networking event in New York City. It can be hard to catch the attention of established professionals at these gatherings, but Godhwani had no problem: His experience with the fund made peoples ears perk up, and many attendees were interested in learning more about the SVF. Godhwani also says the fund makes students better, more interesting candidates when they graduate and hit the job market. It really adds to their experience, having actual money invested in companies instead of just project work or hypothetical case studies that you do in school, he says. Chaithany Krishna Gaddam, a senior analyst at the fund, agrees: SVF has shown us a platform where we get to put theory into practice through real-world businesses Also, SVF gave us an opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs and learn from their experiences. Banikowski says that one of his favorite parts of being involved with the fund was getting to sit in on tough conversations for which lectures alone can never substitute. To give you an idea: Sometimes, a portfolio company is thinking about either selling an additional part of their equity or possibly changing from a C corp. to an LLC., he explains. We get to listen to the board members discuss how that affects our investment. They ask tough questions, and they give input, and that back and forth is definitely not something you get in a classroom. Sarah Spoto, who served as a senior analyst last year and is now on the management team as vice president of marketing and communications, calls the SVF one of the experiential learning experiences that make Simon so unique. Its an amazing learning experience if youre interested in finance, entrepreneurship, or marketing, she says. The mentorship and training resources are a huge benefit as well. We offer our fund members training sessions by professors and VC professionals that have been really popular. This fall, we even had an alumnus from Silicon Valley share his experience in VC out west. รข" The takeaway here, in my eyes, is that we need to tweak our higher education system if we want to produce talented individuals who are ready, willing, and able to jump into the workforce and hit the ground running. The experiential learning offered by the SVF is one way to do that, as are the apprenticeships of Praxis. One hopes more educational institutions will follow suit. (Full disclosure: The Simon Venture Fund recently invested in Recruiter.com.)

Were biased to think men are smarter, and that hurts women
We're biased to think men are smarter, and that hurts women We're biased to think men are smarter, and that hurts women The notion that men are intellectually superior to women remains lodged in our collective psyches. New research offers evidence that this bias has pernicious real-world consequences.A new study finds that women are less likely to be referred to employers as promising potential hires if the position in question is said to require a particularly smart person.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersรข magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!รขDespite the objective evidence of womenรขs intellectual and professional accomplishments, it seems that their ability to make intellectual contributions is still not seen as being on par with menรขs,รข writes a research team led by Cornell University psychologist Lin Bian.รขThis bias likely represents a major obstacle for women aspiring to prestigious careers in todayรขs society,รข Bian writes.A previous study by the same researchers found that women are less likely to apply fo r jobs that are advertised as requiring a brilliant mind. This new research, published in the journal American Psychologist, suggests that such a job description triggers sexist assumptions as people consider their friends and peers as possible candidates.Bian and her colleagues Sarah-Jane Leslie and Andrei Cimpian decided to focus not on hiring decisions, but rather on recommendations. They were curious whether gender bias affects the applicant pools from which even open-minded employers have to choose. In their first study, 347 people recruited online were asked to refer acquaintances for a job opening. Half read a description that emphasized the candidatesรข intellectual abilities, using phrases such as รขhigh IQ,รข รขsuperior reasoning skills,รข and รขnatural intelligence.รข The others read a similar statement that emphasized the need for the employee to be highly motivated. All participants were then asked to recommend รขsomeone they know who meets the requirements o f the job.รข Once they did so, they re-read the description and recommended a second person.รขThe odds of referring a woman were 38.3 percent lower when the job description mentioned brilliance,รข the researchers report. This same bias was found whether the person making the recommendation was male or female. The researchers then replicated the study using a larger and more diverse set of participants (811 Americans). For this group, the level of gender bias was lower, but still significant: The odds of referring a woman decreased by 19.9 percent when the job description included references to intellectual ability.A final study, which follows up on research published last year, provides additional evidence that the roots of this bias can be found in five- to seven-year-old children.By many metrics, women are equal, if not superior, to men in the intellectual arena. รขGirls make up over half of the children in gifted and talented programs,รข the researchers note. รขWomen gradua te from college at higher rates, as well as from masterรขs and doctoral programs.รขYet the underlying prejudice persists. (It helps explain why children still think of scientists as male.) That means some of our smartest citizens are not getting the opportunities they deserve, which ultimately hurts everyone.Bian and her colleagues point to two possible ways to fight this bias: รขBy changing the brilliance=men stereotype, or by making this stereotype irrelevant to decisions about employment.รขThey argue that could be achieved by placing an emphasis on the รขgrowth mindset,รข which states that รขmost skills can be considerably improved with focused practice and appropriate mentoring.รขSo if employers want to attract a wide and diverse pool of applicants, this research suggests they should leave out references to intellect when theyรขre writing job descriptions.
